Georgia Scholastic Invitational Championship 2017

By Laura Doman

Georgia’s top scholastic players converged on the Iron Yard in downtown Atlanta on April 22-23 in a “best of the best” competition for state title championships.  Based on their published US Chess Federation ratings, students were personally invited to play in one of three sections:

  • High School (grades 9-12) with ratings of 1600 or higher
  • Middle School (K-8) with ratings of 1400 or higher
  • Elementary School (K-5) with ratings of 1150 or higher.

Elementary school students with sufficiently high ratings to qualify for the Middle School division were given the option to play in either section.

Sanjay Ghatti, the winner of the High School section, was named Georgia’s 2017 HS State Champion and will represent Georgia at the annual DENKER Tournament of High School State Champions (www.denkerchess.com).

Saithanusri Avirneni, the top female finisher in the High School section, received the nomination to the National Girls Tournament of Champions.

Alexander Rutten, the winner of the Middle School section, will represent Georgia as our 2017 Middle School State Champion at the BARBER K-8 Tournament of State Champions (www.barberchess.com).

Vikram Rajmohan, the winner of the Elementary School section, was named Georgia’s 2017 Elementary School Champion.

Congratulations to our champions and to all the talented scholastic players who came out to play!  The cross-tables are below:
