Scholastic Tournaments

for k-12 students enrolled in public, private, and home schools

2016 QuickStart! Tournament

Sunday, October 2, 2016 at the Marriott Perimeter Hotel.  Perfect for beginners, the QuickStart! is a terrific event for new chess players to text their skills outside of class and an excellent opportunity for experienced players to get back up to speed after a long summer break. Details are posted on the GCA website.


2016 k-12 Grade Level Championship

Saturday, November 5, 2016 at Sutton Middle School.   Compete against others in your school grade for the Georgia championship title!


2017 Georgia Scholastic State Championship Invitational

Saturday-Sunday, January 7-8, 2016 at the Iron Yard in downtown Atlanta.  Georgia’s top USCF-rated scholastic players are invited to compete in this prestigious (by invitation only) tournament.


2017 MLK, Jr. Tournament

Monday, January 16, 2016 at Whitefield Academy.  Individual and school team competition.  This tournament features a service project that players can choose to participate in between rounds to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.


2017 Metro Atlanta K-8 State Team Qualifier

Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the Cobb Galleria Centre.  Elementary and middle school teams in the greater Atlanta metro area compete in four sections: grades k-1, k-3, k-5, and 6-8.  The top teams are invited to compete in March for the Georgia championship titles.


2017 Georgia K-8 Team State Championship

Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Peachtree Ridge High School. Top metro Atlanta teams are joined by school teams from around Georgia to compete for their state championship titles.


2017 Georgia High School Team Championship

Saturday March 25, 2017 at Emory University, Cox Hall Ballroom. High school teams from around the state compete in this unrated event.

2016 Georgia Open

Friday-Sunday, October 7-9 at Emory University, Winship Ballroom.


2016 Senior Open

Saturday-Sunday, October 15-16, 2016, at Hampton Inn and Suites, Alpharetta.  Organized and hosted by the Georgia Chess Club.


2016 Regional Girls’ & Women’s Cupcake & Chess Championship

Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the Iron Yard in downtown Atlanta.  A tournament for girls and women only, featuring cupcakes and other treats for the players.


2016 Class Championship

Friday-Sunday, November 18-20, 2016 at Emory University, Cox Hall.


2016 Blitz Championship

Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Georgia Tech.  A new event this year!


2017 Collegiate Team State Championship

February 25, 2017 at the Iron Yard in downtown Atlanta.


2017 Phillip Taylor State Championship

Friday-Sunday, April 28-30, 2017, Emory University.  The 2017 annual GCA meeting and board elections take place on Sunday afternoon between the last two tournament rounds.
