2016 Georgia Collegiate Team State Championship

By Ashley Thomas

The 2016 Georgia Collegiate Team State Championship was held on February 27, 2016, at the Iron Yard, M. Rich building.  It was a 4-board team format with G/45 time control (each player has 45 minutes), 3-round Swiss System pairings.  The tournament was unrated.

The four teams competed in the tournament including two teams from University of Georgia (UGA Chess Dawgs, and UGA B), Georgia Tech, and Fort Valley State University.  After some interesting and exciting games, Georgia Tech took first place, and UGA Dawgs took second place. The members of the GT team were Dipro Chakraborty, Tommy Lu, Vojtech Miksu, and Jason Wu.

The Iron Yard facility was a great place to hang out.  It never felt like a formal tournament,  rather the ambiance was that of playing chess on a Saturday afternoon in a coffee shop.  The ping pong table on the side provided good entertainment to the players and organizers, as well as viewers.

The Iron Yard, M. Rich Bldg! Unlike the usual venues, the Iron Yard felt very casual and gave a “coffee shop” like feeling. The players loved it !

The Georgia Collegiate Team State Championship is organized by Georgia Chess Association every year. The participation for the tournament this year was comparatively low, but it was encouraging to see the team from Fort Valley join the tournament.  We hope that many more teams from near and far will join in the coming years !
