Food, fun, and chess! What can be better on a Sunday afternoon in the park?
Set aside Sunday, September 13, 2015 from 4 pm to 7 pm for the GCA’s first Membership Social. The purpose? To show appreciation for our members and to celebrate the people who make chess possible in Georgia: our wonderful volunteers who staff our tournaments and the many chess clubs and organizations throughout the state.
The event takes place in Jones Bridge Park, located at 4901 E. Jones Bridge Road, Norcross, GA 30092. Pizza, chips, soda, and freeze pops will be served. Families with small children will be pleased to know that there is a playground nearby, next to the Chattahoochee River with a path leading down from the pavilion to the river.
Event organizer Priya Srinivasan is delighted to host the social. “The volunteers are the pillars of the Georgia Chess Association. The many chess events that the GCA runs would not be possible if not for their support and involvement. The GCA would like to thank and honor them, as well as the clubs that promote and strengthen chess through after- school programs, club activities, camps, and tournaments.
“We would like to invite additional folks to become members. For a very small fee, the member (child or adult) can play in many tournaments, win titles like Georgia State Champion or Georgia Class Champion, and have the opportunity to represent Georgia at prestigious national tournaments. Above all, our chess players find life-long good friends in one another.”
The cost to attend the Social is minimal: $3 per person or $10 per family (up to four people), and free to the volunteer honorees. (Their free entry, however, does not include their guests and family members.) Each volunteer honoree has received a personal invitation by email and notified that they will be publicly recognized for their contributions of the past year.
The gifts, however, are not limited to the volunteer honorees. Every GCA member will have the opportunity to extend the life of their current membership by three to twelve months at no additional cost. By bringing a guest who joins the GCA at the Social, a current member will receive a three month extension to their own membership and up to a total twelve month extension for recruiting four new individual members or two new family members.
So what’s on the schedule? After a brief welcome by the GCA membership chair and president Fun Fong and his board, the afternoon social will begin with chess games and activities for the kids. (And yes, the always-popular oversized chess set will be there!). Food and drinks will be served as these activities wrap up, and then the GCA will formally recognize the honorees.
Dr. Fong speaks for the GCA board by saying that “the Georgia Chess Association greatly appreciates the many chess players, families, clubs, organizations, and businesses who contribute to building a strong and vibrant chess community in Georgia. Many thanks to Priya Srinivasan, GCA membership chair, for launching an annual GCA membership social and volunteer appreciation event!”
Please RSVP by September 4 at www.georgiachess.org/event-2014464, including the number of guests, so that the committee can plan on having plenty of food and beverages for everyone. The online registration accepts credit cards, but only cash can be accepted for those registering at the Social on September 13. Questions may be directed to Priya Srinivasan at email@example.com.
The GCA is looking forward to celebrating with everyone at Jones Bridge Park. As Priya noted, “we would like to continue to appreciate our volunteers and the chess clubs every year!”
