New USCF and ICC Blitz Tournaments

By Davide Nastasio

I believe we live in a golden age for chess. With a click of the mouse, I can watch thousands of games, see the Chess Olympiads live, buy chess books online or download them, listen to comments by top GMs–not to mention all the internet playing sites. Now, the USCF and ICC have joined together to form a new event, which could lead to big changes in the way chess is played.

I remember from some conversations with the Atlanta Chess Center manager, how in the beginning of the 90’s, they would have tournaments every night of the week and many, many players attended. The times changed, however, and many of those players then began to play tournaments on the internet, but those games were not valid for a rating change. But on October 6, 2014, at 7 p.m. EST time, for the first time, the USCF partnered with the Internet Chess Club for a Blitz tournament, 3 minutes with 2 seconds delay, in which the results would be valid for the USCF blitz rating!

Now, the difference is huge: there are already some sites around the world, made by Chess Federations, like the Italian one, which have introduced tournaments with “Online” ratings valid for those who have an Agonistic Membership Card. But the FSI (Italian Chess Federation) still keeps the two ratings: the Blitz rating obtained online and the Blitz obtained OTB (Over the Board) separate. Here, instead, the USCF made a daring move, announcing that such blitz ratings will be valid also for OTB blitz competitions.

The first tournament was free for all players that have a current USCF membership and an ICC membership (at the moment it is not known if other blitz tournaments will be free). The ICC/USCF plans to release a schedule of future blitz competitions. For FAQs and further information, go to http://www.chessclub.com/uscf.

Now let’s come to the tournament. There were 136 players, 7 rounds were played, and the time control was 3 minutes, with 2 seconds delay. The Internet Chess Club software is impressive because it can manage up to 3,000 players in a single tournament!

With havion so mmuch content and articles do you ever run into any problems of plagorism
or copyright infringement? My site has a lot of completely unique
content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my agreement.
Do you know any methods to help stop content from being ripped off?
    I’d genuinely appreciate it.
