Atlanta Kings Join U.S. Chess League

By Grant Oen

team logoAtlanta has been awarded a US Chess League team! The Atlanta Kings is one of two new teams invited to join this most competitive league of 18 squads from around the country. The Atlanta Kings will be managed by Grant Oen, with former Arizona Scorpions Manager NM Leo Martinez serving as the assistant manager. The Kings roster will be headed by GM Alonso Zapata, along with ten of our strongest local players rated around the 2400 mark. The full roster will be announced mid August.

For those that aren’t familiar, the USCL is an online chess league played on the Internet Chess Club among 18 teams across the nation, featuring some of the best players in each region. Atlanta’s weekly matches will take place at Emory University on Tuesdays or Wednesdays each week starting Tuesday, August 26, where we will take on the Carolina Cobras at 7:30 p.m.

Please check the playing schedule at and “like” our Facebook page (atlantachesskings) to receive updates, announcements, and tournament results.

Visitors are always welcome and encouraged to support the team play every week and watch us take down the national title in December!
